Abhisit defends Asean human rights body PDF Print E-mail

Mon, 20th July - PHUKET: Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva defended the creation of the Asean human rights body, widely criticised as “toothless” by certain quarters, describing it as an important first step.



Abhisit said Asean (the Association of South-East Asian Nations) had to make a start first with the ultimate objective to make it a credible, realistic and evolutionary body.

People can assess Suhakam commissioners, says Yeoh PDF Print E-mail

Wed, 24th June 2009 - KUALA LUMPUR: The public will have a say in the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be applied to Suhakam commissioners, unlike other government institutions and agencies.

 

“We are currently putting together some KPIs for certain key result areas,” said Suhakam commissioner Datuk Dr Michael Yeoh.

Tue, June 23 2009 - BARELY three months after amending the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has moved for more changes to meet international expectations.

 

Yesterday, he tabled the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) (Amendment) Bill 2009 for its first reading. The latest round of amendments seeks to address a grouse raised about the transparency in the appointment of Suhakam members.

Tue, 16 June 2009 -  KUALA LUMPUR: A special court for children away from court complexes, presided over by magistrates trained in children's rights and international juvenile justice.

 
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia is also working on alternatives to punishment for children including community service and restitution for juvenile offences especially for petty crimes. 

 
These are among recommendations to the government that are under consideration.

Tue, June 2 2009 - KUALA LUMPUR: Racially slanted statements are unacceptable and it is against the 1Malaysia concept, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

 
Calling on the people to refrain from using inflammatory words that could create unnecessary problems, he said Malaysians must treasure existing good inter-racial relations.
