Two Malay NGOs want ISA to remain PDF Print E-mail

GEORGE TOWN: Some 50 people from two Malay non-governmental organisations (NGOs) staged a peaceful protest in support of the Internal Security Act (ISA) at the ground floor foyer of Komtar here.

 

The Persatuan Putra Pulau Pinang and Pertubuhan Al-Ehsan Malaysia members held banners in support of the ISA at 10am and dispersed some 30 minutes later following police advice

Tue, 21st July 2009 - IPOH: The role of a free and fair judiciary must be defended to ensure that the “check and balance” mechanism in the Federal Constitution is upheld, said the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah.



“This check and balance mechanism is important to build the foundation of a law-abiding government and ensure that no party can hold absolute power.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) will investigate thoroughly the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock which happened on Thursday.

Its commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam said the investigation would also cover complaints from individuals of being injured during a demonstration in front of Wisma Masalam in Shah Alam where Teoh was found dead.

Abdullah: I would have abolished ISA PDF Print E-mail

Mon, 20th July 2009 - PUTRAJAYA: Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi revealed yesterday that he would have abolished the Internal Security Act (ISA) if he has had more time during his term as prime minister.



Lauding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's move to review the act, Abdullah hoped the government would be able to introduce a new preventive detention system, which placed a limit on the scope of arrest and one that pleased the rakyat.

Asean rights body takes shape PDF Print E-mail

Mon, 20th July 2009 - PHUKET: Asean has proposed to name its human rights body the Asean Inter-Governmental Commission of Human Rights, paving the way for leaders of the grouping to launch it when they meet in October.



However, ministers will have further discussions on the draft of the commission’s terms of reference at their retreat today before reaching a final decision on it.
