KUALA LUMPUR: The Emergency Ordinance is still relevant today as communism still poses a threat to national security.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said such preventive laws were needed, as long as attempts to resurrect such ideologies exist.
"Although the insurgency is over, the EO is needed to ensure that communism is not revived," he said after launching "Green and Energy Efficient Courthouses", a private initiative by KFM Solutions Sdn Bhd in an effort to realise the government's effort to reduce carbon footprint.


Nazri was referring to six Parti Sosialis Malaysia leaders who were detained under the EO ahead of the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally for allegedly trying to "rekindle the communist ideology".

Nazri said the T-shirts with the names of former Communist Party of Malaya leaders that were allegedly found with the PSM activists during their arrests proved that the ideology was still alive.

He also defended the police for detaining the leaders under the EO, as this had national security implications
