KUALA LUMPUR: Six detainees, including Sungai Siput member of Parliament Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, being held under the Emergency Ordinance, filed a habeas corpus application yesterday.
Jeyakumar, 56, M. Sukumaran, 50, A. Letchumanan, 49, Choo Chon Kai, 33, M. Sarasvathy, 58, and R. Sarat Babu, 25, filed the application through their lawyer, Yudistra Darma Dorai, at the High Court registry here.

The six named the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and the government as respondents.


Yudistra said he had also filed a certificate of urgency.

The six, who are also members of Parti Sosialis Malaysia, were detained since July 2 and had been denied access to their family members and lawyers.

However, Yudistra said he received a letter from an officer at the federal police headquarters yesterday stating that the six detainees would be allowed to meet their family members and lawyers this evening.


"We can meet them at six different police stations where they are being detained."

Counsel Edmund Bon said the habeas corpus application was made because the grounds for their detention were unsubstantiated.

"It is a political detention because of the Bersih rally."
