PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the arrests of six people including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj under Emergency Ordinance, saying they should be freed at once.
The arrest of the MP, he said, was an insult to democratic practices.

“As an elected MP, he has the right to speak out for the people who want clean and fair elections,” he said in a statement yesterday.

On Saturday, the six, who are among the 30 people being investigated for waging war against the King, were re-arrested under the Emergency Ordinance.

They are Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members who were earlier nabbed on June 25 when they were on their way to Penang.

In GEORGE TOWN, PSM secretary-general S. Arutchelvan lodged a police report over the re-arrests under the Emergency Ordinance.

In his report made at the Bagan Ajam police station in Butterworth yesterday, he named Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and his deputy Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar, and likened the Emergency Ordinance to the Internal Security Act
