SUNGAI SIPUT: Two assemblymen were detained for promoting the July 9 Bersih rally while calling for the release of Sungai Siput MP Dr S. Jeyakumar.

PKR Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang and DAP Jalong assemblyman Leong Mee Meng were among 14 Pakatan Rakyat members picked up by police.
They were released at 8pm yesterday.

They were in a group of 50 people distributing Jalur Gemilang and DAP newsletter Rocket at 8.30am at the Sungai Siput market.

“Our arrest is unreasonable as we did not contravene any law,” Chang said in a telephone interview from the district police station here yesterday.

In an SMS to The Star, state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahalan said the group had been detained under Section 27 (5) of Police Act for illegal assembly and Section 511 of Penal Code.

Meanwhile, PKR information bureau chief Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty said the Government should not use fear and threats in its efforts to stop the rally.
