KANGAR: Nine Myanmars, including a woman, were arrested yesterday after sneaking into the country from Thailand in a car. Three of them were hiding in the boot of the vehicle.

The driver of the car, a Malaysian believed to be the tekong, was also arrested.
Acting on a tip-off, the Kuala Perlis Anti-Smuggling Unit tailed the Proton Wira about 4am.

State anti-smuggling unit commander Deputy Superintendent Zakaria Abd Rahman said when the driver noticed that he was being followed, he tried to drive into the compound of the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital through the back entrance.

"But the gate was closed, so the four of them, including the tekong, tried to escape by climbing over the gate.

"But the tekong slipped and fell into a drain and was injured."

The four were detained.

Zakaria said another three people were in the car and three others were in the boot.

Initial investigations revealed that the Myanmars paid RM60 each to get into Malaysia.

Zakaria said they came through the Malaysia-Thailand border fence and the tekong was waiting for them.

The nine people, between the ages of 16 and 31, were handed to the Immigration Department.
