PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission has revealed that all three federal territories disappointingly recorded the lowest voter registration of citizens aged 21 and above.

At a press conference here yesterday, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said Putrajaya, until October last year, had the lowest with only 50 per cent of its 14,317 residents registered to vote.

In Labuan and Kuala Lumpur, only 35.3 per cent and 33.7 per cent of its residents have registered. Aziz said those who did not register to vote were lackadaisical and irresponsible citizens.

"The EC has initiated measures to make registration easier for everyone.

"We have mobile kiosks, outreach programmes at shopping malls and housing areas, and booths at some post offices to encourage people to register as voters."

He said up to October last year, the National Registration Department records showed there were as many as 15.47 million eligible citizens but only 11.08 million had registered themselves.

"Most people feel it's not going to make a difference in the electoral process.

"But they fail to realise that it is their right to choose who they want to lead the country and that even a vote can make that difference."

The EC chairman said that the independent body was currently studying three new methods -- on line registration system, automatic and compulsory -- to encourage more people to register as voters.

"Each of the three has its pros and cons.

"We need more time to deliberate this before submitting a proposal to the cabinet."
