KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is confident of reaching its National Key Result Areas (NKRA) targets to reduce street crimes by 20% and the overall crime by at least 5% this year.

Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said it is now focusing on executing the proposals under the NKRAs after a nine-month-long discussion from April.

“The priority will be to engage the people, the stakeholders and state leaders,” he said after the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) Roadmap launch yesterday.

He added that while there were no financial constraints to the ministry’s requirements to bolster the police and other enforcement agencies, they had to set limits.

“This is where the private sector and public can come in and add value to what we have,” he said.

He also said that Malaysia was ahead in terms of volunteers in the security forces, which would be given focus in the GTP.

“We have institutionalised volunteerism in the Civil Defence Force and Rela. We have a head start to combat street crime. It’s only how to position them,” he said.

The GTP has reported that some 4,000 security personnel from various agencies had been deployed to 50 crime hotspots in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Selangor and Penang.
