Sat, Dec 19, 2009 - PETALING JAYA: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has proposed to the government for each primary school to have pre-school education in an effort to make country's education system to be at par with developed nations.

The union's secretary-general, Lok Yim Pheng said, through pre-school the government could monitor and evaluate pupils' achievements before they entered the main school environment.

"We feel the Education Ministry should include pre-schooling in the national education package especially in the rural areas to provide balance in our education system," she said.

"In developed countries for instance, pre-schooling is given much importance as children's capabilities can be judged and plans can be made for their future development," she added.

Lok was met by reporters after attending the tabling of the results of National Key Result Areas (NKRA) laboratory to Expand Access to Quality and Affordable Education on the Open Day Programme for the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) at the Sunway Convention Centre.

In the tabling made by NKRA head of laboratory for the matter, Datuk Noor Rezan Bapoo Hashim, he said the government targeted a 87 per cent participation rate for 2012 compared to the 67 per cent rate now.

Lok elaborated, saying that now not all primary schools had pre-school education facilities when early education was important and added with the implementation, the government could meet the aims of the NKRAs - BERNAMA
